And I’m Back: Blizzard Tells Me ‘What Has Changed’

And I’m Back is a mini-series column dealing with the return to Azeroth after being away for so long. The series chronicles personal reactions to changes to discoveries and making the needed adjustments to the new Azeroth.
Wow, what a difference a year plus can make. I’ve left World of Warcraft in the rear-view mirror before, but didn’t expect to come back when I did. The second passing was expected to be temporary. The lull in Cataclysm content, life and general burn being the compounding factors to my exit. Despite my reservations with entering Pandaria, it’s good to be back in Azeroth with the friends I’ve accomplished so much with.
During my absence I purposely had WoW blinders on. Day-to-day news was completely avoided. Only major items were viewed and that’s why seeing the “What Has Changed?” screen popup while selecting talents had me chuckle. While incredibly basic, the information was helpful. Then I began to think about some of the changes to my beloved rogue class.
Naturally, the three-point list Blizzard developed for people like me is what first caught my eye. Numerous “must have” talents becoming specialized spells? Loved that announcement at BlizzCon 2011. Poisons no longer taking bag space? Awesome. Fast daggers removed from the game, any dagger doing the same job? I guess my math skills and dedication mean that much less now.
The last of the three was truly a dagger through the heart. Any speed, it still hurts. I’m not a purist, I don’t believe that Blizzard shouldn’t try to expand the game to as many people as possible, but this only hurts those that took the time to care about such things as the final 1%. The cynical jerk in me wrote it off as “Thinking is too hard for the masses so let’s remove it.” Just a few moments into refining my rogue skills and I’m already upset. Hopefully the rest of the changes make up for the brainless math.

The Secret World Issue 3 Due Tomorrow

Welcome to the site www.oscargamer.com to buy game gold.
After the long delays of Issue 2,  I did not expect Issue 3 to be released on time this month. Color me pleasantly surprised. In a sudden ninja move, they have announced Issue 3: The Cat God will go live tomorrow during the weekly maintenance.  I’d like to give a recap of what’s expected in Issue 3, but details have been difficult to dig up. There’s been no official announcement other than it’s due tomorrow, and no mentions aside from a few hints in a press release about Joel Bylos taking the reigns of game director from Ragnar Tørnquist.
I have to admit, as disappointed as I’ve been with the Funcom layoffs and the loss of Martin Bruusgaard, this does somewhat ameliorate my skepticism at the claims that monthly updates will continue.  Now if only they’d put something good in the store, and actually fix the hideous character models. I continue to have nothing but praises to sing about The Secret World aside from its subpar character models.
Community Manager Morteia is gathering the details, so hopefully there will be an announcement sometime soon. Although admittedly at this point there’s little point, tomorrow we’ll see what’s in it firsthand.
My assumption is this cat god, whoever it is, will be Egyptian. There are any number of gods it could be, though my money is on Bast, Sekhmet, Pakhet, or Maahes. Bast is perhaps the obvious choice, but Sekhmet takes the lead for me as she already features prominently in The Secret World lore. Anyone else care to venture a guess?

Guild Wars 2 : Dungeon Fixes and Exploit Closings Spotlighted in Update

Welcome to the site www.oscargamer.com to buy game gold.
The latest patch notes for Guild Wars 2 have been posted on the official site. Chief among the long list of changes are alterations to several dungeons as well as the closing of exploits some players had been taking advantage of in recent weeks.
We’ve made some significant updates to dungeon rewards. I wanted to try and clarify them here. All of these changes have been the result of an original exploit which was letting players receive upwards of 20 levels by completing a single dungeon run. We initially closed this exploit, which caused some new problems. The result is this new system which should increase dungeon rewards for players who play though them normally but help curb inflation of rewards for those who are using exploitative methods to farm them.

Microsoft compares Halo to Call of Duty

Microsoft compares Halo to Call of Duty
Gamers have long drawn comparisons between chart-topping shooter franchises Halo and Call of Duty, but now Microsoft has commented on the similarities. Speaking to GameSpot, Halo franchise development director Frank O'Connor said such comparisons are "reasonable," given Halo 4's new loadout system. Ultimately, though, he said Halo is different than Call of Duty because it does not favor the player with the "bigger gun."
"Halo 4's loadout system frequently, and sort of appropriately, gets compared to other FPS games, including Call of Duty and others. And definitely, in terms of how much effect the progression system has on your player, that's a reasonable sort of comparison," O'Connor said.
"I think the real difference is that Halo is built on a notion of really balanced gameplay. I love Black Ops, for example, and in Black Ops I'm always trying to get to a weapon; my eyes are always on that prize. And it will be a very, very powerful weapon," O'Connor added. "Halo is really more about survival encounters, rather than getting the drop on someone or winning through having a bigger gun. And also using the things you've learned on the battlefield. So while you are able to unlock weapons and abilities that do modify your baseline traits [in Halo 4], they're, bluntly, not as powerful and not as game changing. They're about subtly and their about style ultimately."
Players will be able to decide for themselves this November. Halo 4 arrives on November 6 exclusively for the Xbox 360, with Call of Duty: Black Ops II releasing a week later for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 13. A Wii U version is in the works, but it does not yet have a release date.
For more on Halo 4, check out GameSpot's just-published coverage from developer 343 Industries' preview event.

Rift Previews: Storm Legion and the Power of Choice

Rift Previews: Storm Legion and the Power of Choice
Trion Worlds is the kind of developer that will make anything they can to give their players plenty of choice in how to play their flagship game Rift. That very ideal takes to new heights this November when the game releases its first expansion: Storm Legion.  I sat down with Trion’s Scott Hartsman, Simon Ffinch, and Mike Daugherty to talk about the many, many ways Rift is reshaping its dynamic content and evolving their own systems in Storm Legion. From a brand new system of Rifts to a system lovingly called “Carnage”, there is something for every type of PVE player in Storm Legion. Every aspect of Rift’s dynamic content, the very basis of Rift from the beginning, has new mechanics, new challenges, new systems, and they shared it all with us.
First up on the docket are Hunt Rifts.  They’re a new flavor of Rift new to Storm Legion that give directed and story-driven content to the player as they go about the new expansion.  They come with their own set of currency, items, and other rewards.  One thing the team remembers from the original launch of Rift was that players loved the rift events, but that they tended to take a back-seat to questing as you got on in the game. Hunt Rifts, like every other bit of dynamic content in Storm Legion, is Trions way of putting things like Rifts and Invasions and Instant Adventure at the forefront of the game so it’s not just a parlor trick and namesake, but a true mode of play in Telara.
They’re sort of the evolution of “Expert Rifts” from days of yore, in that they allow players to hunt and play in the open world and outside of dungeons for real loot drops, as well as their own form of currency to get more progressive rewards.  There are NPCs that tell a story about what Hunt Rifts are (hunting down vicious elemental lords and drawing them out of rifts to strike at them before they attack Telara), and they guide you through how to accomplish them.  There’s a whole progression path towards unlocking them all, and as an estimate Scott and Mike said they believe there are about 50 to 60 (a “sh*tload” as Simon said) different Hunt Rifts to work through and play with when Storm Legion launches.  You finish one, unlock the next, and so forth.  But players who want certain gear can and will be able to repeat them, while the completionists storm through them all (no pun intended).  Every player will have to unlock the Hunt Rifts for themselves, but like all good social MMOs, if you stumble upon a group of people doing one you haven’t yet, you can get credit for it by joining in.
On top of Hunt Rifts, there are a plethora of new Zone Events that really take the system far beyond just zerging the map.  These involve new tactical objects that players will be able to place in the world, upgrade, and use strategically to assist their parties.  Things like turrets, healing stations, and so forth will be an integral part to success in these new Zone Events.  The idea is for players to have unlimited options and the ability to swap back and forth between tasks to progress and never feel shoehorned into one path through the content.
This brought up the nature of Dynamic Content in general, and I asked Scott how the team felt about Guild Wars 2’s Dynamic Events, being that Rift was largely the first title of this recent crop of MMOs to really bring that sort of content to the forefront of the game. He said that he believes ArenaNet did an excellent job recognizing further that just having quest hubs was no longer going to cut it and that dynamic content was the next big step in MMOs. But he also believes it’s just the natural next step of what Trion did in Rift when it launched.  Meanwhile Rift has been and will continue to evolve what they built into their game from the ground up.  Instant Adventure, Zone Events, Rifts, Hunt Rifts… it’s all adding to the choices a player has to play their game.
We then talked about Quest Hubs in general, and I asked the team if this focus on more and more dynamic content was going to eventually lead Rift to do away with quest hub progression. The answer is no. The way Simon put it is that Questing through a zone is like the spine of that zone’s story and content.  It’s there to show you what’s going on in an area from a lore standpoint as you go from area to area.  But the key is that they never need to be required anymore, like they were in the beginning of Rift or they are in some of the other big name MMOs.  You don’t have to go out and collect ten “bear asses” as Simon put it.  You can, as they recognize many players still love questing.  There’s something zen about going out and accomplishing those tasks.  But if someone just wanted to do zone events, rifts, and other dynamic content to level through the game… they can.  It’s all about choice, and giving players plenty of it.
One final cool new feature, and a way to give players even more stuff to play with in the open world, is Carnage.  It’s a whole new system, complete with its own achievements, gear, and dedicated rewards.  Basically, this is a system for the folks who score high as “Killers” in the Bartle test.  As you’re roving about the world, you kill a creature, and you might be tasked with a Carnage Quest, telling you to kill more and more of them in a certain amount of time.  As you go, you’ get rewards, XP, and achievements based on your success rate.  It’s like a “hunter mini-game” that rewards you for acting tenaciously and without remorse. You’ll get paid in currency, experience, and gear for just exploring and slaughtering stuff. What more could you ask for?
Wrapping up, I asked the team if after all the stuff they’ve added to Rift, all of the content they keep pumping out… does it ever feel like the well’s running dry? Simon was quick to chime in: “God no! There’s always more. The amount of things we put in the development queue just because we can’t do it all at once is always growing.” He believes that in 2013, a year from now, the Rift we’ll be playing will be even more varied and deep than what we’re going to see in Storm Legion.  Scott added that expansions are a way to give MMOs that “new car smell” all over again. It has to revitalize the game, and even though Rift’s been receiving regular updates like no one’s business, Storm Legion adds even more new content, new zones, and new stuff to Telara.  It can and should feel like a newer model of the game, and that’s what Storm Legion does.
With a release date of 11/13, and a beta phase not too far away, it won’t be long until we all smell that new car for ourselves.

Guild Wars 2 : NA & EU Queue Size Data Revealed

ArenaNet's Mike Ferguson has posted a graphic look at the queue sizes for Guild Wars 2 worlds in both the EU and in North America. Data was collected for each world over a four day period and shows the length of lines for each of the PvP battle zones.
We thought these charts would be useful information for people to see, as it helps illustrate why some worlds have much longer waits than others. Hopefully it will also help some people decide to leave some of those higher population worlds for one of the worlds with smaller (or no) queues, which would reduce the queue pressure on the overloaded world and help provide more manpower for the smaller world.
Some other information we gathered from this timespan:
Almost 30% of the total players who logged into the game queued up for WvW
About 3% of the total players who logged in and queued never got in.

The Story of Warcraft Recaps Major Events Ahead of Mists of Pandaria

The world of Warcraft has been with gamers for decades. What began in late 1994 is now a property as old as many of the people playing hero in the universe today. Lore has come in the form of novels, comics, manga and games and it’s a lot to digest. Blizzard to the (partial) rescue!
Today, Blizzard launched a new subsection of its official blog to tackle all of the digital happenings in the universe of Warcraft, from Orcs and Humans to each individual content patch of World of Warcraft. Titled “The Story of Warcraft” the new content is sectioned off by chapters, with each area offering a quick synopsis of a major game-based storyarc backed by supplemental videos and wallpapers.
This is a can’t miss for anyone interested in lore, missed chunks of Warcraft’s story or just wants to brush up ahead of Mists of Pandaria.
Hopefully we’ll see the impressive 22 chapters expand with major happenings from the expanded universe. I’m not holding my breath, but lord knows there have been plenty worthy moments. Interested parties of the expanded universe should point their peepers to our extensive guide.

Making Gold in Guild Wars 2

I’ve played a lot of MMORPGs over the years and one thing has always been consistent, I’ve always been poor.  Most of the time it was because I didn’t want to spend the time grinding to make money, I never crafted and I’ve only slightly dabbled in auction houses.  Guild Wars 2 however makes it so easy to make money that for the first time ever, I consider myself in the upper-class.
I went into GW2 with the same mindset as every other MMORPG and after 2 weeks I was poor, with only 90 silver to my name at level 41. That day I crafted my way to level 43 which dropped me to about 60 silver and that’s when it happened. I said to myself, ‘I’m done with being poor’ and turned straight to the auction house to see how I could make some coin. Up until this point I’ve used the auction house sparingly to buy some mats and a few pieces of armor and weapons, but this time my goal was different.
I started to examine categories and items to see what was selling and quickly noticed that GW2 tells you the spread on every item listed. You can see the highest buying price as well as the lowest selling price with the difference being pure profit minus listing costs. Had I know it was this easy, I would have been doing this from day one.
I spent my 60 silver and flipped it within an hour and by the next day I was already over 1 gold; by the end of day three I had 3 gold sitting in my bank.  It’s been 10 days now since I started and I have over 10 gold to my name, plenty of mats plus I’ve bought exotic weapons for myself as well as large inventory bags.
You don’t need to be online often to do this. I log in for 5-15 mins three to four times throughout the day to collect money and to update my listings which are making between 20-50% profit on every sale. I’m sure those percentages will drop down over the next few weeks as more people realize this is the fastest way to make money and start doing it for themselves, but I’m still happy to share.
The way GW2 auction house is setup is unlike any other game as they group all items into a massive pool, so you don’t have to sift through dozens of separate auctions so determine the highest and lowest prices. The only thing required to become rich is patience.
By the way ,if you want get guild war 2 gold ,tell you a fast way,buy from the site www.oscargamer.com, so cheap and safe ,and many free golds wait for you.

Quality of Life Improvements in Game Update 1.4

On top of the major features that we work on and deliver to the fans, we also try to work in smaller features to improve the overall quality of life for our players. Game update 1.4 has several of these features, and it’s worth calling these out.
Group Finder Teleport Back – The top complaint about the Group Finder when we shipped it was that it did not send you back to where you were originally adventuring when you completed the content.
After much discussion, design came up with a compromise that we think will work pretty well. Starting in Game update 1.4, when you leave the Flashpoint by any means, you will be offered a teleport back to your adventuring location IF you have killed at least one boss in that Flashpoint (or in some cases, hit a significant checkpoint). This will be presented in a menu – players can choose instead to jump to the entry of the Flashpoint (in case you want to just jump to the Fleet to repair, for example).
Delayed Binding – Ever accidentally roll greed by mistake? Ever spend your commendations on the wrong item at the token vendor? In Game Update 1.4, players will be able to address this issue. Bind on Pickup and Bind on Legacy items will now have a 2 hour limit in which they can be exchanged. If they were a loot item, you can freely give the item to any party member who was in on the kill and therefore eligible to loot the item. Similarly, if you buy something from a commendation vendor, you will have 2 hours to return the item to any vendor and get a full refund of commendations.
There are limitations. This does not apply to stackable items or mission items. Adding or removing mods and augment slots will permanently bind the item (prematurely ending the timer), as will opening a lockbox. If the item is a Bind on Equip item you get from a vendor, then mailing, trading, listing the item on the GTN, or placing in the guild bank will also prematurely end the timer.
Moods – Here’s something fun: in Game Update 1.4, you can set your character’s mood – i.e. his facial expression. As an example of this, try typing /alarmed or /cheery. This will set your character’s facial expression permanently (although it will be overwritten in conversations when the dialogue calls for a specific animation there). The full list of moods you can choose will appear in the emote browser attached to your chat window.
Companion Customization Improvements – Finally, starting in Game Update 1.4 players will be able to hide the helmet, or unify colors to chest, for their companion’s gear (see the screenshot at the top of this article). No more mismatched, silly outfits (unless you like them that way)!
These are, of course, small improvements, but in these cases, a little bit of programming and design work go a long way towards making players happy and improving quality of life. We’re always on the lookout for small wins like these, and there will be more of them in the future.

Mike Ferguson on the Current State of the World (vs. World)

Hello the site www.oscargamer.com provide the gw2 gold service .
Hey everyone, time for another world versus world update! Today I’ll be recapping some of the more important WvW related issues we’ve dealt with since we launched the game.
First, let’s talk about queues for WvW. Here’s how they work:
You can only be queued for one WvW map at a time.
If you try to enter a WvW map while queued for another map and the new map is not full, you will join that new map, but still be queued for the first one you tried to enter.
If you are queued for a WvW map and try to queue for a second WvW map that is full, you will be asked if you would like to queue for the second map. If you select ‘No,’ you will still be in queue for the first map. If you select ‘Yes,’ then you will enter the queue for the second map and no longer be queued for the first map.
You can be queued for a WvW map while in an overflow map, but you will not be able to see scores or team names at all while you are in an overflow map.
As many people already know, quite a few worlds frequently have multi-hour queues to get in to WvW (particularly the Eternal Battlegrounds), but there are also worlds that have minimal or even no queues at all during prime time.
If you are playing on one of the worlds that has extremely long queue times and can move to one of the lesser populated worlds, we would recommend doing this, since spreading out the player population will not only reduce queue times, but also help provide better competition for all worlds.
One reason some people experience long wait times is that we are still seeing extremely high concurrency rates, which makes queues longer on worlds that have a large number of players focused on WvW. We also discovered a bug that was allowing people to queue up and enter maps ahead of players who had been queued for much longer. Please check on our forums for an announcement when the fix has been implemented. This should fix the problem of some people staying queued for hours while other people can queue up for the same map and enter within a matter of minutes.
Another thing that is fairly constant across all worlds is that Eternal Battlegrounds (the central map in WvW) is by far the most popular map for people to queue for.  You may help lower your wait time by queuing up for a borderlands map first, then entering the Eternal Battlegrounds queue once you are in the borderlands.
Now let’s talk about matchmaking and match timing.
During Headstart Access, we encountered a few issues that required us to take world matchmaking offline for a few days at launch. During this period, we let the matches run a bit longer, which is why some of you noticed that we had matches that lasted 2-3 days or scores would not be cleared out properly when matches were supposed to be reset.
The good news is that we were able to fix those issues quickly and have been running 24 hour matches since September 1. These games have given our ranking system enough data that, starting Friday, September 14, matches will run for 7 days.
We’ve changed to 7-day WvW matches instead of 14-day matches to let the ranking system get a few more points of data faster and to help people get used to playing in a longer match format. WvW match results and the initial world rankings can be found on our forums.

Guild Wars 2 : Noobs Happen

Guild Wars 2 has created a big splash in the MMO pond since it arrived a few weeks ago. Not only are fans of the original having a blast, but many new folks are joining in the fun. We've got a few things to say about n00bs that you won't want to miss. Read on!
Helping out is actually pretty common in the Guild Wars 2 community.  Sure, we have a good laugh but by helping out new players we may be helping create a great player.  The best way to help a new player is to answer their questions, even if it reminds you of the noob you used to be.  All it takes is a few moment to answer a question.  Someone’s asking how to craft, give them some info.  Someone’s asking where a certain NPC is, let them know.  Don’t just tell them to type in /dance, even though that response is very hilarious.  I’ve even seen players take that advice.  If you think it would help, send them over to the wiki pages.  Anything is better than nothing.

Guild Wars 2 : Mac Version Enters Beta

The Guild Wars 2 team has announced that the Mac version of the game is now ready for beta testing. Anyone who purchases the game will be included in the beta. The beta, however, unlike most testing phases, will connect Mac users to the live servers to interact with PC users.
From today, Guild Wars 2 will be available for Mac in a beta version to anyone who purchases Guild Wars 2. The Mac beta version of Guild Wars 2 is still being optimised and, unlike other betas, is connected to the live servers allowing everyone to play together on both Mac and Windows based computers. Users will be able to access the Mac beta client through the Guild Wars 2 account management website after activating their game code.

Amazing games at amazing prices

Welcome every player to www.oscargamer.com
We’ve all done it, walked into our local game store and bought a random game from the bargain bin. It doesn’t always go well and sometimes you’re left with a game you wish you had never bought, but sometimes we get lucky and find a hidden gem that quickly becomes one of our favorite games. So you want that feeling but don’t want to take the chance of buying a bad game? It would make sense for you to check out our list below of hidden gems we’ve found over the past few years. Luckily for you, you can get all these games for extremely cheap!
Dante’s Inferno – Is a hack and slash game for fans of God of War who want to play a similar  type of game on the Xbox. The gameplay is very similar to the God of War franchise but it’s a thousand times more gruesome and weird. That’s what makes it great though. In Dante’s Inferno you play as Dante (obviously) as you travel through the nine circles of hell trying to save your wife, Beatrice.
Nier – Is an action role-play game that unfortunately a lot of gamers seem to have missed out on. Set far in the future you play as Nier as you set out to look for a cure for your daughter’s illness. This was one of the best games of 2010 and definitely shouldn’t be forgotten about.
Vanquish – Is a third person shooter and is probably one of the best third person shooters I have ever played. Unfortunately much like Nier, a lot of people seem to have let this game slip through their fingers. In Vanquish you play as Sam Gideon, a DARPA agent armed with an augmented reaction suit. The shooting mechanics in this game are great and is one that shouldn’t be missed.
Bioshock –  Is a first person shooter and if you haven’t already played Bioshock then it’s time to give yourself a kick! Bioshock has one of the greatest atmospheres in a game ever, and for such a cheap price there’s really no reason you shouldn’t pick it up. You crash land while on a flight into the middle of the ocean where you uncover a underwater city known as rapture. Unfortunately though, it’s filled with tonnes of enemies that are going to scare you witless!
Enslaved: Odyssey to the west –  Is a third person action game that is not to be missed. I picked this one up on a whim and it turned out to be one of my favorite games ever. You play as Monkey, a great protagonist who is being held prisoner by Trip, a loveable sidekick. Everything from the graphics, to the game play, to the story is top notch in this game and you can get it for so cheap these days

At GameStop, Wii U Deluxe sold out in less than 2 days. The PS3, in less than an hour...both models

Welcome every player to www.oscargamer.com
American video game retailer GameStop is apparently, nationwide, sold out of it's pre-order stock of Wii U Deluxe Sets and "basic bundles are dwindling" as well. This information comes from gaming site Kotaku. There had been rumors that the chain was expected to hit its cap soon and it appears it is now official.
While Nintendo fans are cheering and lighting up discussion boards around the world, talking about how incredible it is for pre-orders to be sold out roughly one day after they started, I'm not going to get too worked up over this news. Everyone seems to have forgotten that GameStop hit their PS3 pre-order cap the same day they started. In fact, the PS3 was sold out in minutes...both models. And they were priced at $499.99 and $599.99. I don't think I need to remind anyone how the first years of that console's post-launch life went.
Then again, GameStop reportedly had only 13 to 16 pre-order slots for Sony's console at each store, and we have not yet heard what sort of allotment Nintendo has given each retailer. This is great news, to be sure, but it's always a good idea to wait to see the full picture before celebrating.
For additional perspective, I tried to find the figures for Xbox 360 pre-orders but was unable to find any solid info. If any of our readers can find the numbers, I would be interested to hear them.

ArenaNet Address Economy Concerns in Guild Wars 2

Late yesterday afternoon, ArenaNet’s John Smith addressed the state of the Guild Wars 2 economy on the game’s official blog. With more than two million copies sold, a measurable amount of activity on the title’s trading post and more than two weeks for the economy to mature, Smith offers his insight and expectations and even brooches the taboo topic of exploits.
Smith launches into his discussion by discussing the Trading Post. Initially a worrisome implementation for some players, ArenaNet spent over 100 hours retooling the major economic portal during the title’s first week of life. According to Smith, the post is far more advanced than it was and the changes are just the beginning.
Hit the cut to learn about the Supply and Demand imbalance, exploits and how ArenaNet is policing both
Even more damaging and difficult to fix is the Supply and Demand curve for select items. To address the overabundance of items causing a drastic value trap, ArenaNet has implemented a limited-time item, the Mystic Forge recipes, to remove the high supply by turning them into prize boxes containing gold and “some cool items.” Smith does not mention how long the recipes will remain, but it’s likely until the S/D curve is near the proper orientation.
Smith closes his discussion by bringing up exploits and the hyperinflation such mass participation in an exploit can create. Smith offers the karma exploit, whichallowed players to purchase weapons for 21 karma instead of the intended 35,000, as an example. If only a handful of players abused the system it would not have been a major occurrence. But ArenaNet didn’t catch the problem until over 1.46 million weapons were purchased at an average of 300 awesome weapons per player. Had the offending parties been able to sell these items they’d have created an imbalance in the economy with them gaining incredible wealth for nearly no cost.
To players such as Heartbourne and myself, the economy is the integral part of our MMOG experience. We relish in the deal, cornering markets and analyzing future needs for goods we can provide at a profit. It’s refreshing to see ArenaNet taking the economy so seriously so early in the title’s life.

Guild Wars 2 : Review in Progress - Part Three

This week, fresh off vacation, Bill brings us the third part in his Review in Progress for Guild Wars 2. He dives into the crafting, the UI, the Trading Post, and other general bits and pieces. Take a look!
I did an event this week that had me do math. And I loved it. It’s in Brisban Highlands, and I think it’s called “Utla Metamagicals”.  Basically, there are Asurans doing what they do best: messing with the space-time continuum and as Asura Gates let through tons of monstrous beasts through to our world, you’re running about helping them get the experiment running and preparing the test.  There are panels around the lab that ask you basic mathematical problems and give you multiple choices for the answer. Correctly respond = progress.

Guild Wars 2 Has Sold Over Two Million Units

Welcome to the site www.oscargamer.com
Guild Wars 2 has already sold over two million units according to the game's developer, ArenaNet. The company had to temporarily stop sales of the game only days after its August 28 release because so many people were itching to play, and shortly after ArenaNet turned sales back on they passed the two million sales milestone.
"Reactions from around the world justified the time and care we put into developing Guild Wars 2 and making it into the game it is today," said Mike O'Brien, president and co-founder of ArenaNet. "And this is only the beginning. We're continually fine-tuning the game to deliver the polished experience that our players expect, and we’re already working on new adventures and experiences to introduce into this truly dynamic online world."
If you want to find out what we thought of the game, you can check out our Guild Wars 2 review. For more info on GW2, check out all of our Guild Wars 2 guides to get up to speed on everything the MMO has to offer.

The Secret World Issue 2 Delayed Another Day

Welcome to our site www.oscargamer.com
It’s no secret that I absolutely despise the character models in The Secret World. I absolutely love the game, but I can’t help but cringe … hang on, this sounds familiar. Yup, I said this 2 days ago. Issue 2: Digging Deeper, has been delayed yet again, this time due to a severe exploit that was discovered last night. This is starting to remind me of the awful combination of a bad hair day and prom night. All I want to do is look pretty, what’s a girl to do?
According to Tarib, a serious exploit has been found and Digging Deeper will be postponed until tomorrow, September 13th. Today’s server maintenance and downtime will still be occurring however, along with the downtime required to deploy the patch tomorrow. So much for TSW playtime this week.

Eve Online Winter Ship Update

Welcome to our site www.oscargamer.com
For a niche game as old as Eve is, it’s still going remarkably strong. Coming this winter is a new expansion, bringing with it a massive ship update. A massive 40 ships are being updated, which is 20% of all the available ships. CCP wants to ensure that new players are more competitive; with the addition of many new ships over the years the Tech 1 cruisers are much less viable than they were initially, so the entire Tech 1 cruiser line – 16 ships – are being redone. 4 Tier 1 destroyers are being upgraded, and they are bringing in 4 new destroyers as well. Their priority has been with the frigates – 16 of which are seeing massive updates.
Hit the jump for more details.

Previous expansion Inferno and its after patches have brought Eve players updates to 19 ships; combat frigates, mining barges and rookie ships have all been updated. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. CCP has been looking at all of their graphs and collected data, examining which ships are used the most and least, and they’ve decided that revamps for everything are needed in order to make all ships as viable as possible, especially for new players. A stance I definitely applaud.

Let’s take a little look at some of the changes coming through the pipes. I’ve added specific links where I’ve been able to find them, for all others, there will eventually be posts here.:

Combat frigates: Kestrel, Tristan and Breacher. The Kestrel is gaining long range benefits, with bonuses to missile velocity and damage. The Tristan is a drone boat, with bonuses to Drones and Hybrid Turrets. The Breacher is becoming a close-range missile platform, with the same missile damage boost as the Kestrel, but instead of missile speed, it’s gaining better shields.
Exploration / Scanning frigates: Magnate, Heron, Imicus, Probe. These ships are gaining profession bonuses, with the intention of making them viable for solo exploration in high sec space. They’re getting bonuses to hacking, archaeology and salvaging, as well as a combat focus on drones.
Disruption frigates: Crucifier, Griffin, Maulus, and Vigil. These ships are being changed to make them more viable for new players in fleets. The Crucifier is gaining bonuses in tracking disruption, the Griffin is getting better slotting, the Maulus is gaining better sensor dampening abilities, and the Vigil will be all about target painting.
Support frigates: Inquisitor, Bantam, Navitas, Burst. The design plans for these upgrades was to provide interesting gameplay choices, and to give players an upgrade path toward Logistics ships. These are expected to shake up combat tactics, as they are gaining armor repair capability. The plan for these ships is that they are easy to get into, but difficult to master.
ORE frigate: This ship is being described as a ninja miner. It lacks the hefty mining bonuses of mining frigates, but has greater mobility.
Existing destroyers: Coercer, Cormorant, Catalyst, and Thrasher. These were updated in Crucible, so have few changes. Their focus is trading resilience and mobility for firepower.  There will be 4 new destroyers being added in, focusing on medium range damage with drones and missiles.
Support cruisers: Augoror, Osprey, Exequror, and Scythe. These are the intended next step in the new upgrade path toward Logistics ships. They are losing mining bonuses, but becoming better supporting fighters, with added capabilities for remote armor repair, and though they aren’t as effective as a T2 ship in terms of combat, they are similar in range, speed and stability so they can participate in mixed T1/T2 fleets.
Disruption cruisers: Arbitrator, Blackbird, Celestis, and Bellicose. The Arbitrater and Bellicose are being redesign with combat recon in mind, and the Blackbird and Celestis are intended for fleets.
Attack cruisers: Omen, Caracal, Thorax, and Stabber. These are intended for high mobility and damage. I’m expecting them to become akin to glass cannons, as high mobility usually means lower resilience.
Combat cruisers: Maller, Moa, Vexor, and Rupture. These sound as though they are being completely overhauled, as CCP has described the Maller as a tragedy, and the Moa will be changed based on test server feedback. The Omen and Caracel are being considered for added resiliency.

Mists of Pandaria Zone Preview: Jade Forest

Pandaria is a majestic land of mystery and intrigue. Long has it been shrouded in the mists and relatively untouched . . . until now. To get you better acquainted with this new continent, we’ve pulled out our cameras and snapped a few shots of some of the great points of interest and stunning vistas. We’ve also taken the time to speak to the zone’s designers to ask them questions about the best sites to see, the key storylines you may want to know about, and the creatures you’ll want to meet (or avoid).
Quest Designer: Helen Cheng
Q. Could you name three places you feel players shouldn’t miss on their first trip through the zone?
A. There’s a lot to see in Pandaria but one of the most significant locations is the Serpent’s Heart. This is an enormous statue in the middle of the zone in which pandaren stonemasons have toiled at building for nearly a hundred years. However, they are running out of jade, and the mines to the north are overwhelmed by monsters. Trouble is definitely afoot.
On the coast to the east lies the Temple of the Jade Serpent. This is the home to Yu’lon, the Jade Serpent, who is one of the celestial guardians of Pandaria. She’s the spirit of wisdom, but also represents spring, youth, growth, and nurturing. Players will get a chance to meet her in person.
Jade Forest is also the zone where the Alliance and Horde first make landfall on Pandaria. The Alliance will land in the southwest and will begin a search for Prince Anduin Wrynn, who has gone missing in a recent naval battle. Meanwhile, the Horde arrives on the northern shores. In both cases, the conflict in the rest of the world spills into Pandaria, and they’ll be fighting from the moment boots touch the ground. The tension between trying to explore a new land while simultaneously fighting a war drives a lot of the action in Jade Forest.
Q. So, from a story perspective, Jade Forest is a pretty important zone?
A. Absolutely! All this deep-seated tension and animosity is unleashed on the shores of what has been a relatively peaceful land for a long time. The consequences of the battle in Jade Forest reverberate across the entire continent.
Pandaria’s first dungeon is here: the Temple of the Jade Serpent that I mentioned earlier. If you play through the whole zone, you’ll get to visit the dungeon and interact with the inhabitants when things are peaceful. Once everything goes bad, you’ll have to go back in and try to undo a lot of the damage the fighting between the Alliance and Horde has caused. You’ll learn a lot about the Pandaren people and hopefully gain wisdom from the Jade Serpent herself.
Q. What factions or races will we be able to interact with?
A. Pandaria is host to several races that the Horde and Alliance have never encountered before. There are the forest hozen: semi-intelligent monkeys with a penchant for violence. They aren’t a very mature group and are in fact quite rowdy and crude. They eventually ally with the Horde. (Other tribes of hozen exist in other zones, but they aren’t the friendly sort and won’t ally with anyone.)
On the opposite end of the spectrum are the jinyu who are a wise and proud race of amphibious creatures. They have refinement and culture. Their “waterspeakers” can listen to the waters to foretell events of the future, although this is a rare occurrence. A subset of this race will end up allying with the Alliance.
Players will also encounter the mogu for the first time. This fearsome, brutish race is pillaging and destroying a few areas of the forest, giving us a hint as to their nature. But they’re really just a foreshadowing of what’s to come – the mogu play a huge part in pandaren history, and they’ll play a big role in this expansion as well.
Of course, the pandaren will be there as well for people to get to know. Imagine their surprise when the Horde and Alliance show up and turn things upside down.
As far as factions go, the Order of the Cloud Serpent is a faction and a daily hub that players can access at level 90. Members of The Order are sent out into the wild to find a cloud serpent egg, and then raise their serpent hatchling to adulthood. Serpent riders train and nurture their cloud serpents, then ride them into war. Players will also be able to choose their own egg and raise their own serpent, watch it grow to adulthood, and eventually keep their cloud serpent as their own flying mount. Exalted status with this faction also awards Cloud Serpent Riding, which is a tier of flying skill required to ride any cloud serpent mount from Pandaria.
There’s a lot more to be seen in this zone, but hopefully this will give you a taste of what’s to come in your adventures ahead.

Study – 63% of women polled report being harassed while gaming online

A survey conducted by Emily Matthew over on the Pricecharting blog, found that 80% of 874 respondents polled believe sexism is rampant in the gaming community, and 35% have been on the receiving end of sexual harassment while playing online.
Matthew’s study found that women were harassed four times more than men, and 63% of women reported being called a “c*nt, bitch, slut, and whore.” Others reported they were threatened with sexual assault, or asked for sexual favors, and stereotypical comments regarding female gender roles were prevalent as well. We’re assuming these comments include, but were not limited to: ‘go make me a sandwich’ or ‘get back in the kitchen and make me some pie.’
Many insults hurled at the women, according to the survey participants, also included derogatory comments regarding their weight or general physical appearance.
Women were also much more likely to quit playing a game because of sex-based harassment than were men,” says the report. “35.8% of women reported having quit playing temporarily because of sexism, and 9.6% reported that they quit playing a certain game permanently because of harassment.
The numbers for men in the same areas were 11.7% and 2.6% respectively – about a third of the percentage for women in each case.”
Sexual harassment of men might sound surprising, but look at these numbers: “15.7% of men also reported that they had experienced sex-based taunting, harassment, or threats while playing video games.”
Granted, this figure can be construed as a “minority” but it is still sexism.
The comments directed at these gamers, however, are different from those directed at women in some very telling ways,” the report continues. “Most of the men who provided additional information on their “yes” response to this question experienced comments that revolved around them not fitting a masculine gender role. These men were often called “fags” and compared to or told that they were women and labeled with stereotypically feminine words.
Those who identified as intersexed, identified with a sex that was not listed, or did not identify with any sex, the sexual harassment that was experienced largely related to not fitting into any norm. Those participants in these demographics had almost all experienced intentional misgendering from other players.”
The number of respondents who experienced harrassment outside of the game came in at 9.8% of respondents that continued outside the game, and 68% of women reportedly have kept their sexual identity secret on occasion in order to avoid sexual harassment. 13% of men said they have lied about their gender for the same reason.
Some women admitted to having used their gender as a way to acquire items, attention or favors. However, the number wasn’t that large, as only 10% of women admitted it.
The comments and data from these two questions point to an interesting conclusion: some male gamers use the stereotype of a female “attention whore” to their benefit by pretending to be female in order to garner special benefits,” said the report. “Many of these men even kept images of women that they found on the internet in order to supply those gamers who helped them with nude photos and proof that they were female.
In essence, an individual using femaleness to attain special favors and gifts from others while playing video games is more likely to be a self-identified male posing as a woman than to actually be female.”
Sounds like it’s time for everyone to grow up. If we are expecting the content of our games to show maturity, stop sexualizing/victimizing women, and stop adhering to outdated stereotypes and testosterone infused storylines, we need to start with ourselves first and with society in general. Otherwise, developers won’t take our foot stamping seriously.
Gamers scream, cry, and pull their hair like toddlers fitting over the need for mature, “grown up” themes in video games, yet they ignore online bullying. Gamer’s rejoiced when BioWare added sexual relationship options to Mass Effect, and stood up for it when Fox News distastefully, and purposely likened it to pornography. Gamers scream the loudest when atrocities committed by mass murderers are blamed on video games by politicians and the media. They wail and sign petitions when certain genres are being targeted for ban by government officials pandering to constituents with a “save the children” mentality.
Yet we don’t chastise or alienate those who bully other gamers online. Again, if we can’t act like adults instead of misogynistic, homophobic neanderthals, how can we expect the games industry to get with the times if we can’t?
